Shattered my iPhone's screen a week ago and my replacement finally showed up yesterday. Using the iFixit guide, I tore down the phone in about half an hour. Oh yes, one step in the guide instructs you to peel up the earpiece ribbon, but doesn't mention the proximity sensor needs to be loosened first, lest it be ripped from the ribbon. Which is what happened. Hooray - now when I'm on a call, if the screen touches my face it starts beeping.
The other issue, which I hope is just a poor cable connection, is that the far bottom left of the touchscreen isn't responsive. I can tap it repeatedly, but it ends up killing the entire touchscreen, forcing a hard reboot.
EDIT & UPDATE: Must've been a bad connection. Pulled the screen back off, reseated the digitizer cable, and the problem is gone. Once you've done this job once it's a piece of cake.
Anyone have experience with repairing an iPhone 5S, or a touchscreen device in general? It wasn't particularly hard, and the internal design was surprisingly user-friendly, aside from the damn prox sensor. Wondering if I shouldn't buy an entirely new ribbon assembly.

I would get a new ribbon cable. I had to replace the ribbon cable for the power button in my iPhone 5. That was less than fun. Also, for anyone that may be looking to attempt iPhone repairs, cheaper parts are generally cheaper for a reason. That applies to most things, too. If you're going to replace your screen, I would suggest you buy one with the a home button installed. You'll be glad you did.

Get a Galaxy S4. They are stupidly easy to repair (modular internals, FTW).

Except installing a new home button eliminates the fingerprint recognition feature. I didn't have any issues transplanting mine, actually. It feels slightly more recessed than before, but works perfectly. Just be careful not to tear the flexible "spring" material that surrounds it. Work slowly and carefully with plenty of light.
New ribbons are only about $10 on eBay and $30 on iFixit. Any other recommended sources for parts?
I did go with a cheap eBay screen instead of the iFixit part, but it was about 1/5 the cost. Although, if it doesn't work then I suppose I'll pony up for the official replacement part. The colors of the new one seem weirdly over saturated.

I forgot about the fingerprint recognition. My phone is a 5 and I ripped then button cable the first time (DOH!). I have had mixed success with cheap ($50 or less) ebay screens. If part of the screen doesn't work, see if they'll replace it. The worst they'll say is no.

I did a screen repair on an old HTC ones, never worked perfect, I always suspected the ribbon cable got yanked just a little hard.

I broke my iphone's screen about a week ago too.
I paid $290 at the apple store to have it replaced instead of dicking around with stuff like this. Worth it.
